When a family of seven builds a new home, every space needs to work hard and look good doing it. For this custom home in Lancaster County, Jim Martin Design was invited to collaborate with the builder, interior designer and homeowners to design several key areas throughout the house. These included the kitchen, pantry, mudroom, library, and bathrooms.
The walk-in pantry, pictured here, sits just off the garage entrance and connects directly to the kitchen. With two doorways, it’s easily accessible whether you're unloading groceries or prepping a meal. And with five kids ranging from elementary school to high school, this space had to be highly functional, flexible, and family-friendly.
One of the biggest design challenges was finding the right balance between open and closed storage. Open shelving makes it easy to spot ingredients and snacks, while closed cabinetry keeps bulk items and visual clutter tucked away. The result is a space that feels organized and intentional without sacrificing warmth or accessibility.
The pantry island features a stainless steel countertop, perfect for food prep outside the main kitchen, and is built from walnut with a dark, low-sheen stain. The perimeter countertops are Caesarstone Black Tempal, paired with custom framed inset cabinetry in a mix of White Dove and Briarwood finishes.
A standout feature is the custom-built bar cart, designed to match the walnut island. It’s held in place with magnets when not in use but can be easily rolled into other areas of the home for entertaining or extra prep space.
This pantry isn’t just a storage zone. It’s a hub of activity. The homeowners say it gets heavy daily use, with the kids frequently helping to organize and prepare food. It’s a space that supports the rhythm of family life while maintaining a sense of calm and elegance.
